Can concrete mix be used as mortar?

Although both mortar and concrete are widely used building materials, they cannot replace each other without compromising the integrity of a construction. Mortar is a mixture of sand and cement that is most often used to build brick or block walls. While it may seem like the same recipe used to make concrete, there are some intentional differences between mortar and cement formulations, so the materials should not be used interchangeably. However, you must first prepare the concrete surface for adhesion to occur, making sure that it is even, free of dirt and slightly damp.

Applying a scrape coat to the concrete surface will help the mortar adhere better. For best results, you can use the Thinset mortar. Once you've mixed some of this “scrape coat”, apply a thin layer to the concrete you want to cover. Due to its strength and durability, concrete is used as support structures and should not be replaced by mortar, since they are not interchangeable.

The terms concrete, mortar and cement are often used interchangeably by people outside the construction industry because all three are used in masonry as a binder or as a building material. A scrape coat is simply a thick, watery mixture of the mortar with which you want to cover the concrete. Wood should be treated with an oil-based product to prevent concrete from sticking to shapes. According to Denny Craft Molds, single mortar mix contains 1 part Portland cement and two parts sand, while concrete mixes contain 2 parts cement, 4 parts sand, and 3 parts gravel or aggregates.

Later, we'll look at concrete versus mortar in more detail, along with how to make them and which one is best. The main difference is that concrete is also mixed with aggregate stone, which greatly increases its strength and durability. You can buy ready-made concrete mixes in bags that combine cement, sand and gravel so all you need to do is add water. And there are also concrete mixes with special additives designed to improve their performance in certain applications, such as cover mixes, repair mixes and quick-set mixes.

In addition to keeping concrete moist while applying mortar, make sure to clean concrete surfaces thoroughly to ensure a successful project. It is a hydraulic substance, which means that the chemicals in your mixture will harden once water is added. If the concrete surface you are working with is dry, it will draw all of the moisture out of the mortar mix you are applying. If Portland cement concrete is one of the most widely used construction products in the world, masonry mortar is very close.

The purpose of this long analogy is to let you know that the interchangeable use of concrete and mortar will lead to disaster.
