The typical thickness acceptable to many contractors is between ¼ and 2 inches thick. Technically, concrete overlays can be as thin or as thick as desired. The standard thickness of concrete countertop slab is 1 ½ to 2 inches, similar to marble or granite countertops. However, contractors can create the illusion of a thicker countertop by projecting a folding front edge.
On this kitchen island, for example, the top has a total thickness of 1 ½ inch, but it appears to be much thicker because it was molded with a 6-inch flip apron. There are many things that could have gone wrong that likely caused the concrete wear surface to fail, but the good news is that there is a repair method that will produce beautiful, long-lasting results. Clean or sweep existing grout on the floor just before laying the concrete with a stiff broom. Concrete countertops really have no size limitations, depending on the materials and casting techniques used. The coating material can be a simple mixture of sand and cement or, in fact, it can be a real concrete mix that includes small pieces of stone or even large stones, depending on the thickness of the coating. If the slab sounds solid and it's difficult to do more damage to the slab with moderate hammer blows, existing concrete is probably an excellent candidate for an overlap. For bonded and unbonded concrete cover slabs, the strength of concrete for concrete cover slab is governed by the function of the slab; 30 MPa for light duty, 40 MPa for medium duty, and 50 MPa for heavy duty. Since the floor is interior, the cracks between the existing concrete and the trenches for plumbing and electrical are not likely to move.
The day before placing the concrete, moisten the surface and keep it moist until you place concrete, but there is no standing water on the slab during laying. A 1 ½ inch thick countertop made of standard concrete weighs approximately 18.75 pounds per square foot. For bonded and unbonded concrete cover slabs, reinforcements, such as deformed bars, welded wire cloth, bar or fiber mats, can be placed in the deck to reduce the width of shrinkage cracks. The coating mixture will be permanently bonded to the existing concrete slab, if you ensure that the existing slab is clean, dust-free and slightly damp before applying the overlay.
